The Real History of Asian Americans Magazine
20-page Magazine Design (front & back covers design and inner spread layout designs), copywriting for a 20 page magazine
DESCRIPTION
This magazine is a comprehensive guide looking into the deep history of AAPI hate in America that dates back to the 18th century when the first people of AAPI came to America. It discusses the long history of anti-Asian sentiment and talks about key figures of the movement. It gives readers resources to educate themselves and others on how to offer support and become an ally.
APPROACH
The vision of this magazine was to make the layout interesting and dynamic so that the heavy content could be easily digested. In this age of social media influence, anything that could help capture and retain readers’ attention would be beneficial especially when the content is so important to learn.
BACKGROUND
This AAPI Magazine was maybe my most challenging project in regards to designing a tasteful and impactful cover and inner magazine spreads and having to come up with the content of the entire magazine. When I began this project, we were amid the media showing the public increased cases of violence against people in the AAPI community. It wasn’t new for people of AAPI descent to experience micro/macro aggressions or full-fledged racism. Still, because the media showed senseless violence toward people who looked like me, I felt more and more unsafe leaving my house. I felt it was my due diligence to create a comprehensive guide looking into the deep history of AAPI hate in America that dates back to the 18th century. In researching the content of this project, I learned a lot more about my cultural history and am proud to have the opportunity to present this vital information to the world while practicing and honing my design skills at the same time.
